Sapporo 2017 Asian Winter Games Opening Ceremony

The Opening Ceremony of the Sapporo 2017 Asian Winter Games was held today (19 February 2017) in Sapporo Dome, Sapporo, Japan.   The Opening Ceremony was divided into three parts. The first part is the Ceremony including the Parade by all participating countries/regions. Representing Hong Kong as a flag bearer, Mr. Tony LEUNG, Captain of Hong Kong, China Ice Hockey Men’s Team marched in the Ceremony with the Bauhinia Flag that showcased the spirit of Hong Kong people, followed by the delegation led by Chef de Mission, Dr. T. Brian STEVENSON, SBS, JP and Deputy Chef de Mission, Mr. Karl C. KWOK, MH, Medical Team, Ice Hockey Men’s and Women’s Teams, and Short Track Speed Skating Team.   After the Parade, the President of the Asian Winter Games Organising Committee delivered a welcome speech and then the President of the Olympic Council of Asia declared the Opening of the 8th Asian Winter Games.   The second part is for welcome performance and the OCA Games Flame was lighted. The last part is special live performance which brought the whole Ceremony to a climax.   The Ice Hockey Men’s Team of Hong Kong, China has made their first win against Singapore yesterday (18 February 2017), and the Short Track Speed Skating Team will compete in Men’s 1500m tomorrow (20 February 2017), while the Ice Hockey Men’s and Women’s Teams will compete against Chinese Taipei and Thailand respectively.   The Federation would like to take this opportunity to express our heartfelt thanks and appreciation for all the supporting organizations and sponsors, including Home Affairs Bureau, Leisure and Cultural Services Department, FILA Marketing (Hong Kong) Limited, Hong Kong Express Airways Limited and Kee Wah Bakery Limited.

Flag Presentation Ceremony for the Hong Kong, China Delegation to Sapporo 2017 Asian Winter Games

7 February 2017, Hong Kong: The Flag Presentation Ceremony for the Hong Kong, China Delegation to Sapporo 2017 Asian Winter Games (AWG) was held at Jockey Club Lecture Theatre, 2/F, Olympic House today. The Federation is honored to have Mr. LAU Kong-wah, JP, Secretary for Home Affairs, witnessed by Mr. YEUNG Tak Keung, JP, Commissioner for Sports of Home Affairs Bureau and Mr. Raymond W. M. FAN, JP, Deputy Director of Leisure & Cultural Services Department, accompanied by Mr. Kuninori MATSUDA, Ambassador and Consul-General and Mr. Masaru IGAWAHARA, Deputy Consul-General of Japan in Hong Kong, to present the HKSAR Flag to Mr. Timothy T. T. FOK, GBS, JP, President of Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China (SF&OC), Mr. Ronnie M. C. WONG, JP, Hon. Secretary General of SF&OC and Dr. T. Brian STEVENSON, SBS, JP, Chef de Mission of Hong Kong, China Delegation to the Sapporo 2017 AWG. The Ceremony remarked the blessing and support from all guests and the Hong Kong people to the Delegation. The 8th AWG will be hosted in Sapporo and Obihiro, Hokkaido, Japan on 19-26 February 2017. Athletes and officials from 31 countries and regions are expected to come together to showcase a variety of winter sports. A total of 78 delegation members including 50 athletes will represent Hong Kong to compete in 2 sports, namely Ice Hockey and Skating (Figure Skating and Short Track Speed Skating). The number of both athletes and events increased when compared to previous AWG. In addition, it is the first time for our Women’s Team of Ice Hockey to participate in the Games. To support our Delegation and at meantime promote winter sports to the public, a dedicated web page for Hong Kong, China Delegation to Sapporo 2017 AWG has been developed for sharing the Games’ information and competition results of the Delegation.
